Lyrical Analysis of...
Grandad Jack
- 22secs
- I'm looking out the window at the wind and the rain
- Thinking how things will never be the same
- Without you, patriarch of the family
- We're all just trying to get back to normality
- One person who always seemed to be there
- Teacher, father, grandad, carer
- Present at every occasion, big or small
- Looking on proud as punch at us all
- Treated me equally from day one
- Introduced me to the whole town as his own
- A popular man in the village, an iconic figure
- Hardworked hands with the missing fingers
- Wood smelling jumper, bacon for dinner
- Mass every morning, he was no sinner
- Arguments with Granny over politicans
- Having tea &pink biscuits in the kitchen
- That bellowing laugh when Heartbeat was on
- That laugh we loved so much but is now gone
- Wise eyes behind square frames
- Occasionally he'd mix up our names
- And we'd joke about it, it was just old age
- Even though to us he never seemed to change.
- Doing the crosswords with a magnifying glass
- Always working on a project, he just had the knack
- To build anything. From churches to sheds.
- Trailers. Furniture. A real Jack of all trades.
- Driving on sunny days to the countryside
- He had a heavy foot, I'd hold on for dear life
- The heart of a lion, no injury could stop him
- He just got on with living after each operation
- Watching war films and The Virginian
- Which were a bit graphic for us children!
- Irish &American ballad tapes blaring in the car
- Wishing he'd turn it down to save our ears!
- Climbing up trees in the garden
- Homegrown fruits &veg til he got more frail
- Tried his best at everything, hated to fail
- Always independent, despised being a burden
- Plotting, planning, drawing in the attic
- Just wish you'd come back, Grandad Jack..
