Lyrical Analysis of...
Black July
- 1983, in a small country,
- Where the majority discriminate the minority,
- This is the story,
- I guess that's life right?
- But that's lives man, that ain't right,
- In the tunnel, at the end, a light
- Now they need to get out,
- So they put up a fight,
- But 3000 lives, wasted,
- Again and again, copied and pasted,
- It's a vicious cycle, on a endless repeat,
- The minority always facing, a endless defeat,
- No matter how close, they get to victory,
- All the lives lost, gone down in history,
- They're existence gone, only remembered in your memory,
- So many deaths, both young and elderly,
- This dark month, now known as Black July,
- But we will never give up, we will always try.
- So like you remember the 5th of November,
- And you know Christmas is in December,
- Just remember the suffering of a people far away, please,
- Black July, may they Rest In Peace. (x2)
- Let us rewind a bit,
- To 1956, the passing of the Sinhala Only Act,
- It made a massive impact,
- On the relations between our two ethnic groups,
- This created a social divide,
- Many Tamils lost their job, beside,
- You hurt our pride,
- Language and cultural discrimination,
- A process of elimination,
- Of the Tamil culture, a civilization,
- Big mistake, you increased our determination,
- To ask for a separate country,
- In the name of 'Tamil Eelam'
- So like you remember the 5th of November,
- And you know Christmas is in December,
- Just remember the suffering of a people far away, please,
- Black July, may they Rest In Peace. (x2)
- You caused this, Four Four Bravo,
- This event and what would follow,
- The hollow cries for help,
- And the sorrow of families and the emotions they felt,
- But this is the cards that life has dealt,
- So we have to stand up and fight,
- And that's what we did, beginning in nineteen seventy two,
- The Tamil's revenge was finally due,
- This is the Sinhalese point of view,
- We came here first, this island is ours,
- But we existed together for many centuries,
- We are also the countries founders,
- Kingdom of Kandy and the Jaffna Kingdom,
- Our alliance so fearsome,
- It held back the Portuguese in 1560,
- I hope I shared with you some wisdom,
- The real cause, of the Civil War,
- And the Tamil people, we swore,
- To avenge our people's lives, no more,
- 25 years, of so many blood and gore,
- Because many just say the Tigers used terrorism,
- And that may be true, but this is the truth,
- Research on it, find the proof,
- One Love, One Nation.
