I called up MilesWild, who's the producer for the 6th Beat Challenge Cypher. I learned a little about his story, how he got involved with music, and what he's up to next. You can peep the interview here, as well as continue reading for more questions that aren't in the video.
How do you make your beats? Describe your process.
At home I use Logic almost exclusively. I like to tap out my kick-snare pattern first. I play keys and I love jazz. I am starting to sample old vinyls more on the Akai MPC 5000. Some tracks are very organic and some are carefully designed; my workflow just depends on my mood. If it's a trap beat I start with the 808 bassline. automate a low-pass Sugarbytes Wow-filter on almost every element of the most songs. I may have 4 tracks with the same drum sequencer, each with different filters and effects, then slice and arrange sections midi or into each track at different counts. When EQing my mix I find that subtractive work is infinitely better than additive.
What are some of your musical influences, or people you look up to in the industry?
As far as composing beats, definitely Dre, Premier, DJ Quik, Warren G. I love that funky 90's west coast sound. I have a ton of hip hop artists but at this moment in time the best rap artists are Kendrick, J cole, Game, A1, and YG. They all influence my music in different ways. Pac is the best ever because he didn't need clever punch lines for his music to be felt.
What do you like to do for fun outside of music?
I play basketball at Venice Beach every weekend. I work at a restaurant called True-Food kitchen as a server (not fun). I go out and party occasionally, but I prefer rolling up a swisher with the boys and playing 2k, it's cheaper.
